I really enjoyed my visit to the Airbus site in Stevenage. There are over 1,500 jobs there, and over 10% of employees live in Hitchin and Harpenden. Airbus have trained over 4,000 apprentices in the UK over the past 10 years.
The Airbus site in Stevenage is focused on defence and space – and is a world leader. Airbus is the largest space company in Europe.
I was shown the Mars Rover, which is due to leave for Mars next year and will look for signs of past life on the planet. Stevenage is home to a state-of-the-art ‘Mars Yard’, which was designed to mimic the appearance of the martian landscape and put the rover through its paces ahead of its mission.
It was a great visit. A credit to Hertfordshire and a local employer for apprentices, graduates and more experienced scientists and technicians. I support them, and am working hard to help them grow and develop in our area.
