It only seems like yesterday when our little boys were tiny babies, and as a family we know first hand how important it can be to new mothers to have advice and support on breastfeeding in the early days of a baby’s life.
Yesterday, I had a wonderful visit to the Hearts Milk Bank, which is the UK’s newest milk bank. It offers equity of access to safe and assured supplies of donor human milk to hospitals and community-based clinicians for patients. It is bringing a new approach to the provision of milk bank services locally – at the L&D, Lister, St Albans and Watford in particular – and is rapidly growing to spread its services throughout the country.
It wasn’t just an interesting visit, but I learnt a huge amount from professional women of the highest quality, who are not only giving more support to breastfeeding services, but are also doing academic research on human milk and the impact on babies. I believe in supporting them, want to help them in whatever way I can, and we are already getting to work.
