Protecting our Local High Streets and Small Businesses

In Hitchin, Harpenden and surrounding villages, we are lucky to have so many fantastic local businesses, which we must continue to support. In the last Parliament, I lobbied the Government to reduce business rates for small businesses.

I have continued to work with our businesses, councillors and community figures to promote our local economy.

Supporting small businesses through the Coronavirus pandemic

At the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic I was contacted by constituents with businesses in a whole range of industries who have not thus far been covered by many of the government’s extensive financial support packages.

I developed a way in which local authorities could meet this gap, to help out local businesses who had fallen between the cracks of the government’s schemes of support. I worked very hard with Government ministers and the Chancellor’s team to make this a reality. This new measure allows councils to provide grants of up to £10,000 or £25,000 to support additional local businesses.

Visit to the Cricketers of Redbourn Pub

This afternoon, I enjoyed a fantastic lunch at the The Cricketers of Redbourn Pub. The past months have been undeniably tough for all businesses, but especially our local pubs - we need to make sure that we get out there and continue to support them as they reopen.

Unlock Britain - PMQs

This afternoon at PMQs, I asked the Prime Minister if he will work with me and consider some of the ideas I put forward in my "Unlock Britain" paper that was published with the Social Market Foundation this morning.

Reopening the High Streets

Today is a big day for the high street and our economic recovery. Well done to everyone who has worked hard so that shops can safely reopen their stores today.
