I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that we are facing an epidemic of mental health problems in young people. Indeed, I am closely involved in Tilehouse counselling and Growing Resilience In Teens (GRIT) in Hitchin, which are charities which are working to improve their mental health.
I have been constantly pressing Ministers in the need for faster action to improve the situation in our schools, as many teachers tell me that they are unable to cope with the overwhelming demand for existing services.
Our constituency (both Hitchin and Harpenden schools are covered) has been chosen out of ONLY 25 in the whole country to be the first areas with newly dedicated, and funded, specialist mental health support teams for our schools. I know that our schools will make great use of the extra resources and skills, and our young people will benefit hugely.
These support teams are due to be out in place by the next academic year, and I will be working closely with the schools in January to make sure that this is done in the right way.
