New Hitchin and Harpenden MP Bim Afolami was at St Nicholas Church in Harpenden on Sunday (18th June) for a Great Get Together, organised as part of a national campaign to mark the first anniversary of the murder of Jo Cox MP.
“I want to thank the people of Hitchin and Harpenden for electing me to represent them as their new Member of Parliament – I feel hugely privileged. I’m really keen now to get on with the job, and will be getting stuck into local issues over the coming weeks.
Congestion in Hitchin is a real problem. It makes it harder for local people to get around town and it results in worsened air quality, impacting on everyone's health.
Making sure that people are safe - on our streets and in our communities - is vitally important. We have already delivered record numbers of police officers on the street in Hertfordshire and crime is down since 2019.
We all know how important having a good job is. Building on the success we've had so far - for example through my Generation Hitchin apprenticeship fair, which helped connect hundreds of local young people with employers offering some really high-level apprenticeships in our region.
Luton Airport should not be allowed to expand further. No ifs, no buts. Luton Airport's plans to nearly double their passenger numbers will blight the quiet enjoyment of our rural area for local families.
